The Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL) Committee investigates confidential allegations involving individuals who may be engaging in the unauthorized practice of law. When appropriate, the Committee files complaints with the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Board on the Unauthorized Practice of Law to seek injunctions and civil penalties.
Through its work, the Committee helps protect the public and preserve the integrity of the legal profession by ensuring that legal services are provided only by those properly licensed and qualified. Members review and evaluate matters with a high degree of confidentiality, applying careful judgment in determining when formal action is warranted.
The Committee meets monthly, and its proceedings are not open to general CMBA membership. Service on the Committee requires discretion, professionalism, and a commitment to upholding the standards of the legal system.
